Search Engine Marketing (SEM) blends in two core techniques:

1) Search engine optimisation (SEO). SEO aims to position your site in the ‘organic’ or ‘natural’ search listings - the results usually found on the left of the search results page. Main benefit to the search engine optimisation is that it doesn’t cost you anything when someone clicks on these links, however SEO requires patience, investment and a long-term approach (more than 6month) to generate visible results.

2) Pay Per Click (PPC, Paid Search). Unlike SEO, Paid Search is a quick and effective way of getting your website visible in the search engines. These links tend to be found on the right of the page and at the very top. The most popular PPC program is the Google Adwords advertising platform.

Companies choose to place ads that are matched to search queries. PPC or ‘sponsored links’ are essentially results that advertisers have control over. Every time You somebody clicks on a PPC link advertiser pay a certaing amount of money to Google. That is how Google has become a signle, biggest advertisier in the world.
